The king’s promotion of the cruel Haman to a high position upset Mordecai, a Jewish court member, who refused to bow to Haman. Angered, Haman plotted to exterminate all Jews. Mordecai enlisted Esther, who revealed her Jewish identity to the king, leading to Haman’s downfall and execution for his genocidal plot. This event marked the origin of Purim, celebrating the Jews’ survival.
