What are the roles in a murder mystery?
A murder mystery is a game in which each player takes on a specific role in order to solve a fictional murder. Each role is carefully crafted to include a backstory, motivations, and clues that will help players solve the mystery. At The Murder Mystery Company, we specialize in creating immersive and engaging murder mystery experiences, and we’re here to explain the roles you may encounter in a murder mystery.
1. The Victim
The victim is the character who has been murdered, and is played by one of our professional actors. Our victim ‘dies’ during the first act of the performance and their backstory and clues are crucial to solving the mystery.
2. The Suspects
The suspects are the characters who are suspected of committing the murder. Each suspect has their own backstory and motives, and may or may not be involved in the crime. The suspects are played by the guests at the murder mystery event.
3. The Detective
The detective is the player who is responsible for solving the murder. They will ask questions, examine clues, and piece together the evidence to solve the mystery. The detective will be played by one of our professional actors..
4. The Witnesses
The witnesses are characters who may have seen or heard something relevant to the crime. All of our guests are witnesses – they will watch our victim ‘die’ during the first act and will use their death to gather clues to solve the crime.
5. The Red Herrings
Red herrings are characters designed to mislead the players and distract them from the real killer. They may have a motive or appear suspicious, but ultimately are not involved in the crime. Many of our suspects will have a motive or opportunity; but only the true ‘killer’ will have both.
Each role in one of our murder mysteries is carefully crafted to provide clues and information that will help players solve the mystery. At The Murder Mystery Company, we’re here to provide a fun and engaging murder mystery experience that will leave your guests talking about it for weeks to come.
