Why We Love What We Do

Sure, we’ve gone on and on about why you should host or attend a murder mystery party with friends. We’ve even walked you through how to create your own. But we’ve never really shared why we love doing what we do.

And here’s the twist: it’s all because of you.

The question “Wait– what is a murder mystery party?”

Before our feature on ABC’s Shark Tank in March of 2024, we got this question constantly: “What is a murder mystery party?” Our event planners answered it on nearly every call, and our bloggers (hi, that’s me) had to explain it time and time again. But it wasn’t the explanation that made it fun—it was the reaction.

That’s what brought the pitch to life.

Sometimes it’s a simple “Oh! That sounds fun!” Other times, we get a good laugh when someone realizes we need a 4ft x 6ft space to “die safely.” One woman once asked me, “Okay, so do you take my money now, or…?” Still one of my all-time favorite reactions.

The struggle to get photos at events because no one is ever on their phones

We all know it—social media and AI brain rot are real. Over the past few decades, it feels like people have become more and more disconnected, and many researchers blame it on being “chronically online.”

Our events break people out of that digital prison. And I’m not just saying that.

Take this example: every year at American Immersion Theater HQ, we throw a holiday party and bring in our own actors to perform. Last year, Scott Cramton—founder of The Murder Mystery Co.—invited the cast of Speakeasy, Die Softly, the same team that performs at Carmine’s in Times Square.

At one point, Scott was begging people to take their phones out and record the show. But everyone was so wrapped up in the moment, barely anyone did. Just a few photos and videos here and there. I mean—how often do you get to see Broadway-caliber actors perform in Grand Rapids, Michigan?

No one wanted to be on their phones. We all just wanted to be in the story. The fact is, as we grow older, novelty begins to fade, and we stop playing like we did when we were kids.

Empowering people from all backgrounds to participate

One of the things that makes murder mystery dinner theater so special is that almost anyone can enjoy it in their own way. We have scripts ready for nearly every age, personality type, and event. And after performing thousands of shows over the past 23 years, we’ve learned one thing for sure: we can make just about anyone break out of their shell.

We hear it in reviews all the time—often from the most unexpected places. One of my favorites? A call I had with a rep from the Kansas City Chiefs. They’d done two events with us. The first was to welcome the rookie players in 2023.

Now, football (okay, sports in general) is kind of the opposite of theater. Sure, they made four High School Musical movies if you count Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure, and yes, those films are all about how people can love more than one thing—like sports and theater. Troy loved basketball and the stage. Gabriella was a super-nerd who loved singing. Sharpay adored pink and bopping to the top. And Ryan? He loved fun hats and being dramatically overshadowed by his twin sister.

Working with the Chiefs felt like my own personal High School Musical. There I was, surrounded by guys four times my size, expecting a decent time at best. But I was blown away by how much they loved it. They had so much fun, they booked a holiday party with us a few months later.

The only thing that could’ve made it better is if Taylor Swift had shown up. (Drop a line if you’re a Swifty like us.)

Hearing that kind of feedback from such unexpected places? That’s what makes this work so special.

We get to work with some of the COOLEST clients

Yeah, I know—I just spent three paragraphs talking about the biggest team in the NFL right now. But the list of dope clients we’ve worked with doesn’t stop there.

Just to name-drop a few: Sydney Sweeney, Paris Hilton, Al Pacino, Charlie White (aka MoistCr1TiKaL), George Lucas, Fergie, The Jonas Brothers… and the list keeps going. We’ve also partnered with major companies like Amazon, Sony, Blumhouse Productions, Focus Features, Bethesda Softworks, Google, IBM, SoftBank, I Heart Comics, Marvel, Warner Brothers—and a bunch more I’ve probably forgotten. We’ve been on TV and streamed online so many times it makes my head hurt.

But name-dropping aside, it’s not just the celebrities who are cool.

It’s the everyday clients—the ones who call in bursting with excitement about planning their event. We’ve done everything from birthdays to weddings to office parties, and the truth is: every single event is unique. The people are what make immersive theater so much fun. And we’re just lucky to be part of the story.
